Job Introduction
We are looking for a Social Media Manager who shares our love of BBC 1Xtra and celebrating black music and black culture to join a creative team using short form video to help audience discover live radio, music performances and our podcasts. This role sits in the BBC Radio central social media team that runs accounts, commissions video, visualised radio moments, and edits and optimises content for channels that reach millions every week.
Main Responsibilities
  • Plan, schedule and curate the social media channels for BBC Radio 1Xtra.
  • Devise and support huge social campaigns, react quickly to news, and create brilliant formats and ideas that our audiences will want to share and engage with.
  • Task manage the 1Xtra social media team and their work, alongside regular suppliers from both inside and outside the BBC.
  • Ensure that content is syndicated across the BBC’s portfolio and artist accounts to maximise impact.
  • Create relatable, authentic, and engaging content for our channels that brings our audio output to life.
  • Ensure output adheres to the BBC’s editorial guidelines and that our teams and suppliers understand their responsibilities.
  • Daily collaboration with colleagues in 1Xtra across production and commissioning to develop 1Xtra’s social strategy across platforms

This role will have a focus on celebrating black music and black culture – working primarily on amplifying genres such as Afrobeats, Dancehall, Reggae, Hip Hop/Grime, RnB, and spotlighting big radio and TV moments. There will also be opportunities to work for our other music networks, podcast launches and big music events such as Glastonbury, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, or Radio 2 in the Park, as well as big cultural moments in the calendar such as Notting Hill Carnival.

Requirements

You Will Need To Demonstrate The Following
  • A thorough understanding of 1Xtra , its output and purpose of amplifying black culture in the UK.
  • A thorough knowledge of how social video platforms work, and how users discover music and audio in these spaces.
  • A passion for celebrating and authentically reflecting black music and black culture in the UK.
  • A track record at creating campaigns that engage with young audiences. We will ask you to share links and examples as part of your application.
  • Extensive experience of working as a social media manager or equivalent in a similar environment, amplifying black culture in the UK.
  • Strong quality video and image editing skills – must be able to work within the Adobe Creative Suite and be able to devise or commission thumb stopping social formats for platforms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics and how to use them to inform content decisions and choices.
  • Strong interpersonal and decision-making skills, coupled with the ability to establish credibility and maintain effective working relationships with senior contacts both internal and external to the BBC.

Benefits & Perks

Salary: £41,896 - £55,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
