In 2021, the BBC announced plans to move even more of our productions to bases across the UK. BBC Audio teams in Cardiff and Bristol are leading the way with a variety of programmes and podcasts for Radio 3, Radio 4, World Service and BBC Sounds. We’re now looking for Producers to deliver content within the new topical output team based primarily in Cardiff. This is a critical position bringing together some of our current programmes with output moving from London. If successful, you’ll be producing some of Radio 4’s biggest programmes including Saturday Live, Any Questions? Any Answers? and Last Word. You’ll be working for one of the BBC’s fastest growing production teams and based in the BBC’s newest building in Central Square, Cardiff.
The right person will be an experienced and credible journalist with an in-depth knowledge of UK politics and current affairs. You’ll need to be comfortable working across a range of different output, both live and pre-recorded. You’ll require substantial knowledge of Radio 4 output and the UK audio market. We’ll also want a champion of impartiality, diversity and sustainability.
BBC Audio Wales and West of England We’re a new hub within BBC Audio bringing together network radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol. Staff have opportunities to collaborate, develop ideas and further their careers across a wide variety of output for all the BBC Radio networks, the World Service and BBC Sounds. Our areas of production include: current affairs, science, factual, rural affairs, food, documentaries, books, music and drama.
BBC Audio has around 670 editorial and technical staff who create and deliver more than 100 hours of original audio every day. Our podcasts and radio programmes are heard across the UK and around the world and we work with some of the biggest names in music, entertainment and journalism. Role Responsibility
We are seeking a Producer with energy and ideas that can help us make creative and compelling audio, which connect with audiences. We want people with an in-depth knowledge of current affairs, politics and culture, with a curiosity for the world around them. You will need to demonstrate a real enthusiasm for programme making and an informed interest in speech radio, be a good team player and have the attitude and aptitude to develop in this multi-skilled role. You’ll be directing people and supporting on air talent. Crucially, you’ll be able to lead demanding and editorially complex live radio programmes.
The successful candidate will be required to work a Tuesday to Saturday pattern, with some travel for Any Questions production on location.

Requirements

Are you the right candidate? You will have a track record of producing high quality and compelling content. You will be able to deliver the turn round of a weekly programme quickly and efficiently, respond to a fast changing brief and be able to deal with the demands of live output. You’ll be a strong team member and be good at getting the best from others.
  • Proven knowledge of and interest in news, politics, current affairs and/or history and culture
  • Be able to demonstrate strong editorial decision making, in the context of live current affairs output
  • Proven radio digital editing skills – (preferably on Dira Highlander/Sadie)
  • Demonstrate research skills and ideas generation
  • Driving licence (travel required)
  • Experience of delivering live and pre-recorded radio programmes
  • The ability to lead teams, both production and on air talent
  • Experience producing on location and in studio
  • Experience of delivering programmes efficiently
