Code Switch, the nation’s signature podcast and reporting team on race and identity, seeks an experienced Producer 1 to help us bring compelling stories to our audience. As a producer on the Code Switch team, you’ll bring ideas, interviews, books and thinkers to our podcast and radio show, and make our sound sparkle.
We’re re-imagining our future — exploring how we can go to new places and tell new stories while preserving the distinctive voice that has made Code Switch a “must-listen” for so many people. And we’re committed to staying grounded in the highest levels of journalism.
Your main responsibility will be to work with our hosts, editors and producers in creating episodes of our weekly podcast. You’ll be a vital part of our journalism, with the range to cover the broad landscape of race, identity and ethnicity in the U.S. You’ll bring your own unique ideas and perspectives to that work. You’ll take responsibility for seeing an episode through the ideation, reporting, writing, mixing, producing and publishing process. You’ll work independently at times and join in our group edits and collaborations.
This position is based in New York City, but we are open to consider candidates located elsewhere.
This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
Responsibilities
  • Record, mix and edit complex, multi-track audio stories
  • Take a story or episode assignment and see it through the process, working with the hosts to report, book guests, cut tape, write scripts and join in edits and final production
  • Manage complex production assignments on a tight weekly deadline
  • Contribute story ideas and two-way interviews suggestions for hosts
  • Contribute to social media, digital production and other aspects of podcast episodes
  • Ensure that all content complies with NPR’s standards for accuracy and fairness
  • Assist with managing and producing live shows and special events

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least four years of experience producing on Dalet, ProTools, Adobe Audition or similar broadcast digital audio workstations.
  • At least four years of experience in podcasting or broadcasting.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise on issues and stories on race and identity.
  • Excellence in analysis, criticism, and in news judgment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in and passion for covering a variety of cultures.
  • Proven ability to contribute and create and produce original ideas for enterprise and long-form reporting, as-well-as quick turnaround two-way interviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to support program hosts in scheduling guests, recording, interviews, field production, script writing and other production needs.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing weekly or daily radio programs and segments, writing host copy.
  • Demonstrated, up-to-date understanding of digital concepts and best practices, including writing for the web and social media.
  • Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience.
WORK LOCATION
Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the New York City office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

Compensation
Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $95,000 - $102,500 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options. Plan options include medical, dental, vision, life/ accidental death and dismemberment, long-term disability, short-term disability, and voluntary retirement savings to all eligible NPR employees.
