Live News Editor
Description
The live news editor is responsible for helping to deliver a distinctive live content package for the The Times and The Sunday Times website. They will ensure the quality of our digital journalism, editing live breaking news, improving online copy, pictures, graphics and video and guaranteeing that all output remains true to the Times and Sunday Times aesthetics.
Responsibilities
- Successfully manage productive relationships with the news editor, the planning editor, the wider news desk and production editors across the newsroom
- Help to manage the workflow for stories on the homepage, agreeing them with desks and chasing copy
- Use SEO, Inca, Parsley and Google Trends to help guide decision making and constructing headlines
- Present “tomorrow’s top stories” at news conference when required
- Take a holistic view of the day’s content across all sections and how/where it will appear on the homepage and section fronts
- Work closely with the planning editor to get ahead of the biggest stories coming down the track
- Cover other shifts across the news desk as and when required
- Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote The Times and Sunday Times content
Requirements
Skills and experience
- Experience working as a digital news editor for a national newspaper or major digital news organisation
- Demonstrable interest in news and current affairs as well as good knowledge of features and sport
- An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy
- Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve
- Able to communicate succinctly and effectively
- Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times and The Sunday Times
- Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
- A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
