Director of Music & Festivals, The Momentary
Description
The Director of Music & Festivals will research, plan, and execute regular performance seasons, festivals and special projects at the Momentary and other venues including Crystal Bridges, as requested, that resonates with community interest. The Director of Music & Festivals will provide leadership to direct reports, booking agents, consultants, and, in conjunction with the Momentary Director, a nationally based Music Advisory Committee. They will represent the Momentary with donors, community partners, artists, other staff, interns, volunteers, members, and the general public as needed.
A seasoned music professional, the ideal Director of Music & Festivals is flexible, creative, and collaborative, with a passion for a multitude of musical genres and a solid business acumen and leadership experience.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
The Director of Music & Festivals is charged with leading the music aspect of the Momentary’s mission. The key areas of this work include:
- Developing a diverse music roster that includes single concerts/performances and festivals that drive revenue and broad attendance.
- Contributing to a long-term music vision for the Momentary that is recognized nationally for excellence.
- Engaging in a broad range of programs and partnerships, internally and externally.
- Proposing and developing creative and engaging projects of various scale and content.
- Working closely with Marketing Communications team on the promotion of music programs to ensure ticket sales.
- Working with fellow staff to ensure best in class standards of hospitality and inclusiveness for the artists we welcome across music, visual arts, and food.
- Creating and examining financial reports and budgets to project, plan and analyze profitability of music programs.
- Collaborating with the Director of Production on quality sound experiences on campus.
- Collaborating with the Director of Operations on the design, planning, and execution of large-scale festivals.
- Evaluating both internal and external data to better understand which audiences attend, which audiences are not, and music preferences that will inform programming to drive greater attendance locally that extends regionally and nationally.
- Working in partnership with colleagues to contribute to programs to lectures, workshops, presentations, and special projects.
- Serving as an ambassador for the Momentary and Crystal Bridges locally, nationally, and internationally, being an active member in the field as well as with the general public.
- Cultivating and stewarding donor prospects and donors, in partnership with the development team.
- Supervising a team responsible for music programming, artist hospitality, artist contracting, project management, and others as determined by Momentary Director.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Education, Training, and Traits:
- Deep knowledge of concert production, preferably with experience in multiple genres and the music festival circuit.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking and writing
- Excellent working relationships with performing arts venues, artists, manager, agents, industry professionals, and scholars
- Self-directed and motivated, with both a savvy and scrappy mentality.
- Experience working directly with artists and their representatives on large-scale projects.
- Solid experience in developing, examining, and interpreting financial statements, i.e. pro formas, profit and loss statements.
- Proven experience in complex budgeting processes.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years prior music programming experience, including concert and festival production, with supervisory experience of a team.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Ability to obtain Passport for International Travel
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency with standard office equipment including basic computer literacy (word processing, spread sheets, e-mail, etc.) telephone, fax and copy machines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong research skills, ability to perform scholarly research in the field.
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated project management and negotiation skills.
- Ability to interact respectfully, collegially, and professionally with all employees and volunteers at all levels of responsibility.
- Ability and willingness to be a team player both within the department, and throughout the entire organization.
- Ability to maintain the highest ethics as they relate to all aspects of curatorial endeavor, and to understand and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.

- Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum and performance spaces, and in communities served. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Position requires some independent overnight travel for research, professional meetings, national and international travel as necessary to fulfill responsibilities of the position.
