Job Description
Associate Audio Engineer, NYT Opinion Audio
The New York Times audio team is seeking an associate audio engineer to work with The Ezra Klein Show team, and on other products across the Opinion Audio portfolio. The associate audio engineer will play a crucial role in maintaining and troubleshooting our state-of-the-art AoIP studios, working closely with the Senior Audio Engineer, producers, and Supervising Editor of The Ezra Klein Show, as well as other show teams, and New York Times reporters and contributors under the direction of the Senior Audio Engineer, The Ezra Klein Show.
This role will focus on two key areas: Working closely with the Studio Manager to provide in-studio session support (setup, training, and troubleshooting) as well as post-production editing and mixing as directed by the Senior Audio Engineer.
Responsibilities
  • Engineer tapings in-studio and remotely of The Ezra Klein Show, as well as other shows as directed
  • Assist the Senior Engineer in mixing episodes of The Ezra Klein Show
  • Edit dialogue and assemble radio broadcast versions of Ezra Klein Show episodes
  • Act as a first line of defense in troubleshooting studio and Pro Tools workflow issues
  • Help train and assist staff in studio procedures, Pro Tools operation, and field recording best practices
  • Assist Studio Manager in inventory management and equipment deployment
  • General technical support including audio restoration, file management, host/guest setup, and SOP documentation.
  • Contribute to conversations about workflow improvements and standardization across our portfolio of shows and products
  • Collaborate with Sound Designer/Composers, as directed.
  • Occasional evening and weekend technical support

Requirements

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience as an audio engineer (or equivalent position) required
  • Believes in the New York Times’ mission and is dedicated to being part of our innovation and growth.
  • Able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times
  • Strong knowledge of Pro Tools, iZotope RX, as well as creative plug-ins like Soundtoys
  • Comfortable with the concept of Loudness and mixing to different specs
  • Ability to quickly, calmly and creatively troubleshoot complex issues under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects to completion
  • Excellent attention to detail, with good organization and time management skills
  • Collaborative attitude and strong communication skills; with the ability to communicate complex technical information to people with technical and nontechnical backgrounds
  • High level of proficiency with Apple computers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong dialogue editing skills
  • Experience with electronic repair and maintenance (such as soldering)
  • Musical composition experience, with an emphasis on music for a broadcast environment
  • Experience working in a podcast or broadcast environment
  • A deep familiarity with and enthusiasm for the Ezra Klein Show

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $85,000.00 and $85,000.00.
